FIFTY PERCENT OF the population cannot be ignored if an industry wants to go very fast or very far. This was the consensus at Autocar Professional's recently-concluded special virtual conference - Women to Watch-organised on the occasion of International Women's Day. The webinar which was conducted on March 9, centred around the theme: Paving the way for higher inclusion.
The webinar aimed to not only celebrate women achievers in the Indian and global automotive industry but also to find possible measures that could be deployed by companies to achieve higher inclusion of women in the automotive workforce. In India, women representation in the automotive workforce presently stands at only 10 percent, which is much lower than developed economies. Moreover, with the country driving towards becoming a US$5 trillion economy by 2030, a thriving automotive industry is one of the many sectors that will accelerate the country's growth. And the journey is likely to be easier d more equitable if the participation of women in the organised workforce increases proportionately.
The virtual event brought together six leading women in the automotive industry as panellists-Latha Chembrakalam, Head of Continental Automotive's Technical Centre (India); Shradha Suri Marwah, Vice President, ACMA and Chairperson and Managing Director, Subros; Suman Mishra, Chief Executive Officer, Mahindra Last Mile Mobility; Sherry Vasa, Executive Vice President and CHRO, Marelli; Pamela Tikku, Chief Business Officer, ICAT; and Jyotsna Sanghi, Chairperson and Managing Director, SGS Motors, and Managing Director, Sanghi Brothers.
