Control Freak: Joystick Technology Provides Unprecedented Maneuverability
Florida Sport Fishing|Florida Sport FishingJuly/August 2017

WHILE SEASONED CAPTAINS CAN DOCK A VESSEL with the utmost control under the worst conditions, many boaters are truly terrified about navigating a crowded marina. They say a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor, but for owners of outboard-powered vessels with twin, triple and quad configurations, advanced steering systems eliminate much of the adversity by delivering precise directional thrust for total boat control.

Control Freak: Joystick Technology Provides Unprecedented Maneuverability
Whether including joystick control in a new build or opting for aftermarket installation, it’s difficult to make a case against this valuable breakthrough. Perhaps the only negative one can attribute is the high cost of installation, but for some boaters peace of mind, and a clean rub rail, remains priceless. While those with opposing views claim the constant shifting will cause premature wear on the clutch and lower unit’s components, today’s fly-by-wire electronic outboard systems are built tough as nails.

Among the many advantages brought about by such intuitive operation, none outweigh the user-friendly operation that results in stress-free docking experiences. However, the benefits of the latest outboard steering technologies extend well beyond the dock. After Volvo Penta introduced joystick operation to the recreational market for vessels with IPS pod-drives over a decade ago, the technology soon made the leap to outboard-powered platforms and today’s joystick control systems are more advanced than ever before. With the help of these responsive steering systems, first time boaters will look like professional captains in any docking scenario.

Mercury and Yamaha produce branded joystick systems for OEM installations, with SeaStar Solutions offering their own products designed for refits compatible with Suzuki, Evinrude and Yamaha. Like with any purchasing decision, key differences between manufacturers exist and prospective buyers must keep several considerations in mind.

Underwater LEDs

MY CENTER CONSOLE WAS RECENTLY OUTFITTED with full spectrum color-changing underwater LEDs and I can’t wait to test them out. I’m aware of their ability to attract forage and predator species to the boat from dusk till dawn, but are high intensity LEDs effective at attracting life during the day? If so, what color shines brightest amid the natural light of the sun?
