GoodHomes|September 2019
Dear NishaMy husband and I are avid art collectors. But our teenage son is really not an art lover, and dislikes the way our home looks. It's actually quite stressful! How do we celebrate our love and ensure our son feels at home?— Anaya Kriplani, via email.

A Art is sometimes subjective and to allow your son to feel as excited by art as you are, I would recommend you create zones. Allow your art to dominate the areas you use more, but, for your son create zones where he allows his tastes for art to develop.

I'd like to address your queries in a series of pointers:

1. Art is like wine and you need to allow your son to experiment and develop his taste with some experimentation. With acquaintance and the global exposure, you should introduce him to paintings and sculpture. This will help him to open up to a new world view and view art works with a different perspective.

2. Once he develops an interest and is open to experimenting, infuse diverse art into your design theme that will help harmonise your space with the new global viewpoint of your son. Tip: Trust your aesthetic creativity for design success. Work with a basic idea around which all else resonates in harmony — be it how you hang the art, harmonise the art with painting the wall a particular color to bring in that harmony of design, or unite the space with a colour or a theme. It’s a liberated sense of design.
