As I&rsquo;m on heavy clay I&rsquo;m planting my trees into open-bottomed containers around 70cm (2&frac14;ft) tall. By doing this, it allows the trees to have the best start in life in a mix of top soil, John Innes No 3 and manure before their roots penetrate the garden soil. I also sprinkle a handful of mycorrhizal granules over the roots before planting as this can help to encourage root growth in the young trees.Always make sure to use a reputable tree supplier when you order young trees. I find Frank P Matthews (www. frankpmatthews. com) not only has a great selection of varieties, but also a wide selection of rootstocks, suitable for any garden. For containers I prefer to use M26 rootstock for apples, G5 for cherry and Quince C for pears, as this means they won&rsquo;t grow too unruly. Since it&rsquo;s almost Christmas I&rsquo;ve also decided to grow the fantastic tasting &lsquo;Christmas Pippin&rsquo;, with crisp, sweet flesh.Before planting, it&rsquo;s important to remove around a third off each branch to an outward facing bud (the tree&rsquo;s leader can be reduced by more), and this will make the plant bulk up, producing a better shape and preventing it from becoming too leggy.If you&rsquo;re planting cherries, only prune in late summer to prevent fungal infection. Make sure the tree&rsquo;s graft union is above soil level and firmly stake it to stop it moving in the wind and protect from root damage. Positioning the stake in front of the tree will protect it from the prevailing wind, and by doing this, it should also prevent the tree rubbing on the stake and causing damage. Add a thick layer of bark to young trees grown in pots to help prevent them drying out in the hotter months.
