MATERIALS

• Plymouth Yarn Encore medium (worsted) acrylic/wool yarn (31/2oz/200 yds/100g per skein): 1 skein each #174 cranberry, #389 gray frost and #217 black

• Size K/101/2/6.5mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

GAUGE

10 sts = 3 inches; 8 rows = 3 inches

PATTERN NOTES

Use size J/10/6mm hook to make child’s hat and size L/11/8mm to make man’s hat.

Do not chain one at the beginning or end of any round in this pattern; this assures an almost invisible seam. No chain one stitches are used in this hat. Do not turn hat for any rounds. Yarn tension is important for the appearance and fit of hat. Adjust yarn tension at end of each round, before tying off yarn.

Every round will begin with leaving 2-inch ends of both colors of yarn, before crocheting the round.

When finished with round, both colors of yarn will be fastened off, leaving 2-inch ends. Adjust tension of stitches with first yarn and tie both of the 2-inch ends of that color together. Do the same thing for the second color. Ends will be woven into the ridges of the inside of hat at end of body section, and then, for the crown, ends will be woven into the ridges of the inside of hat before the last 2 rounds are completed.

Every round is crocheted with two colors. To prevent tangling of yarn, feed yarn from one skein from the back of hat, and feed yarn from the second skein from the front of the hat while crocheting.
