Greg Hsu Has Found His Place

There is a scene in Greg Hsu’s latest movie, Marry My Dead Body, which sees him running around on the streets without a stitch of clothing on. It’s a scene that is played for laughs — the film is, after all, a slapstick comedy. What the viewer marvels at is how many of these scenes there are — one of them even involves him wireflying — and how the actor fearlessly throws himself into every single one. “I’m just acting, doing what I’m supposed to do,” says the 32-year-old, who also went nude for his role in Nowhere Man. “It wasn’t that difficult because everyone was very professional and everything was done within a safe range.”

THE CHALLENGE OF COMEDY

If that was easy, it was perhaps the only thing that was when it came to the movie, especially since the Chinese actor describes the role of Wu Ming Han as one of the hardest he’s ever taken on. In the film, which was only released this year, he plays the straight guy — a homophobic police detective who becomes entangled with the ghost of a murdered gay man. “The difficulty of playing Wu Ming Han lies in portraying his personality — having to make his character real within a comedy setting,” he explains. “To a certain extent, you have to be pretty precise with that degree of characterisation, and that in itself requires a lot of understanding.”
