It wasn’t an actress but rather, a film that inspired her to become an actor. TAMANNAAH BHATIA proudly claims that after watching Dil Toh Pagal Hai, she wanted to become an actress, and that she can watch the same any number of times. She believes in looking at life in an absolutely positive manner. Success and failure is a part and parcel of life, and what has to happen will happen, is what she swears by. All you have to do is wait for the right time or rather wait for ‘your’ time. Tick, tock, keep an eye on the clock, for her time is coming soon.
Who inspired you to become an actress?
It was completely my own goal. Dil Toh Pagal Hai inspired me to become an actress. Movies, in general, inspired me. I used to watch eight films at a stretch. I would just spend my Sundays watching movies back-to-back, that’s how I spent my childhood days.
You don’t belong to a filmy background. Did that make your journey difficult?
Opportunities came to me on merit. I didn’t have any kind of backing or support. Like, if I did an ad film, that would get noticed, and I would get more work. My work was dependent on whatever I had done in the past. I’d get more work because somebody had seen my previous work. That’s how I built my career. I was immediately absorbed into the South film industry. But even there, it was not an immediate success. It was my fifth film that did well down South. I had a series of films that did not do well. I was very young when I started. I didn’t have a map to plan my journey. I have never been able to plan my career, as I don’t know what will happen tomorrow.
You changed your name for numerological reasons. A lot of other celebrities do so too. Do you think it works?
My name was always the same, I just changed the spelling at the beginning of my career. I did it because I believe in it. Right after I changed the spelling of my name, my career took off. I am not someone who is very superstitious. If a little tweak to your name can have a positive effect, I don’t see anything wrong in it. All of us are unique in our own way. You can’t compare two people or their journeys. Another star might have a completely different journey than mine.
You are one of the highest paid actresses down South. Do you think Bollywood is yet to raise the bar for you?
