Public transport in India runs predominantly on fossil fuels. This leads to high levels of pollution in urban areas, and contributes to the growing current account deficit arising from high fuel imports. The stop-and-go traffic situation in our country also reduces the efficiency of conventional engines. These are just some of the factors that make electric mobility a critical intervention. So let’s find out who were the top manufacturers of electric vehicles in India in 2018-19.

Top Six Electric Vehicle Manufacturers In India

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has initiated several measures to drive the large scale electrification of the transport sector. The National Electric Mobility Mission Plan was released back in 2013 with the target of launching 6-7 million electric vehicles by 2020. The government’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric (FAME) vehicles programme was launched in 2015. This was a two-year initiative offering financial incentives to the buyers of electric and hybrid vehicles. In spite of all these schemes, EV manufacturing has not taken off in India, which suggests that there are many challenges that need to be addressed by the government in consultation with the industry. Perhaps that is why the second phase of this policy, FAME II, was launched on April 1, this year with an outlay of 100 billion over the next three years for setting up the charging infrastructure and for 100 per cent electrification of public transport.

The government has also set a target of ensuring that 30 per cent of the vehicles on Indian roads by 2030 are electric. It plans to partner with Japan to help it set up large scale electric vehicle plants, invite investors from abroad, and also strengthen the EV battery manufacturing ecosystem.
