In this issue

As editor Janet Hutchings discusses in this issue’s From the Editor’s Desk—and as any longtime EQMM reader can attest—Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories have always been an important influence on EQMM and its editors, and of course on many of its authors and readers as well. This issue is EQMM’s annual celebration of Sherlockiana, as well as the second issue in the magazine’s 75th-anniversary year. From our archives we bring you a unique and wonderfully witty take on the Holmes homage, “The Adventure of the Single Footprint” by Robert Arthur, which originally appeared in EQMM’s July 1948 issue. You’ll return to Baker Street with pastiche and parody respectively in Keith Hann’s military-history infused case “The Last Man” (from the Department of First Stories), and in Terence Faherty’s, “The Blue Carbuncle,” another in that author’s humorous series taken from “the first drafts” of Dr. Watson’s manuscripts.

Echoes of Sherlock Holmes appear in “Murder on the Brighton Run” by Amy Myers, set in the Victorian period and featuring sleuth-chef Auguste Didier, and in R.T. Raichev’s whodunit “Monsters Are Among Us,” in which mystery writer Antonia Darcy and her husband investigate a murder that occurs during an opulent and eccentric party. We visit London of another era in Barbara Nadel’s “French Model Upstairs”: A young woman explores her own background in seedy 1960s Soho—and what she finds will startle you, as it certainly does her.

To complete our yearly celebration of Holmes’s birthday (copies of the issue will be distributed at the annual Baker Street Irregulars banquet on January 15) we’ve got Steve Steinbock’s annual round-up of Sherlockian titles for The Jury Box. Don’t miss it!
