Celebrating a decade of commitment towards Africa

Eleven years ago, The Times of Africa began with a thread of affection that over time weaved into a lifelong relationship with the African continent. With an aspiration to ‘Bring Africa to the World’, we resolved to work for this dynamic demography and turned that resolution into a reality.

Here we are - celebrating more than a decade of commitment towards Africa. As the sun rises to mark a new day and we get a year older, we look back in anticipation. We acknowledge and appreciate this journey as The Times of Africa comes back to print after a hiatus of two years.

With information reaching readers at a blink-and-miss speed, it was important to adapt to the ever-evolving digital technology. Thus, The Times of Africa went completely digital, allowing us to provide information to our readers in real-time irrespective of their geographical position.

However, we received feedback from our readers that their bookshelves missed the presence of the hardcover. Hence, on popular demand, The Times of Africa is back in print to cater to its readers.

This is a pivotal juncture in our relationship with Africa. Through all these years, our association with Ambassadors and the esteemed staff members of all the Embassies of Africa in India and the Indian diplomatic missions in Africa has only strengthened with time. As we herald towards an era of new beginnings, we seek your support and blessings, especially the High Commissioners and Ambassadors of African missions in India.

The name of a publication stands tall only because of its readers. Thus, with a hold on the present and an eye on the future, we, The Times of Africa, endeavour to expand our reach to create awareness about the potential of the African continent.

What does women empowerment mean to you?

Does one have to be a feminist to support women empowerment? And what does feminism stand for?

As many people, as many interpretations! The essence, however, of all the political and social movements, ideologies and belief is EQUALITY OF THE SEXES. Many would argue that if the core of the concern is equality, then why give special emphasis on the upliftment of women?

Because since the ancient era, women have been subjected to suppression and inequality; they have been denied the right to make decisions about their own life. And this had to change!

One of the tools to bring about that change is by increasing the representation and participation of women in the economic territory. Today, we see women carving their space in the male –dominated corporate world. However, it is the informal sector where women are really ruling the roost.

The year 2018 saw a major controversy surrounding the use, rather the abuse of digital technology. It was how social media giant Facebook exposed about 87 million users’ private data to Cambridge Analytica, a London-based elections consultancy data firm linked to American President Donald Trump. This incident triggered renewed debate on the perils and the devils that piggyback on the rewards of ‘Digital Technology’ or the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution.’ 
But isn’t every invention born with its set of pros and cons? Whether the innovation becomes a demon or an angel depends upon how we make use of it. If security-breach is a major threat of the Internet, we also have heart-warming stories from all over the globe – especially the African continent – of how digital technology is not only improving lives but also saving them. 
In Kenya, for example, the Toto Health app is helping expecting women and parents of young children by sending text and voice messages tailored to stages of pregnancy or a child’s age. 
International establishments such as the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) are building platforms to scale digital health at the national level in respective countries, build a capable workforce to effectively use Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as well as address the need of multi-stakeholders partnerships for sustainable adoption of digital health.

young Indian boy received his schooling. Growing up in this west-African nation,
he observed how his parents, both doctors, worked tirelessly for the welfare of the
local people. Somehow, he felt a sense of belonging and warmth in this foreign
land. Little had he thought that this thread of affection would guide him to weave a lifelong
relationship with the African continent. He resolved to work for this dynamic demography and

Cut to 2018 and here we are! Celebrating 10 years of ‘The Times of Africa’. As the sunset rolls and
we get a year older, we look back in anticipation, acknowledge and appreciate this journey through
our ‘10th Anniversary Special’ feature.
The year 2017 has been unpredictable, to say the least, as long-established norms have been
broken and transitions - political, economic, and social – have taken place all over the continent.

Inexhaustible minerals, abundant opportunities 
Life’s unfairness doesn’t give us the license to walk the wrong path, for life is not fair on anybody. Most of the people in the world have some preconceived notions about Africa. Majority of these notions are embedded in the bed of hearsay perceptions, which judge Africa as the continent without ample remunerative opportunities. 
However, the African economies are surging up in terms of economic development, which could well be attributed to various sectors enriched with frenzied business opportunities. The relationship between India and Africa has been an old one. The world is an eyewitness of our historical association in many aspects. Be it our struggle against colonialism or our fight for attaining independence and liberty. At present, India and Africa both are looking ahead to grow and strengthen the roots of their bond. There is a famous adage by Thomas Carlyle that goes, “He who has health has hope; and he who has hope has everything.” Indeed! However, health care system of any region or country must focus on three prospects: high quality, universal coverage and cost-effectiveness.
