The Indian steel industry in the past few years has been on slippery roads.
Secondary manufacturers especially in Iron ore dependent clusters have been
on the edge; many have even succumbed. Economists would talk about how
these business cycles wash out non-serious players from the industry or are
opportunities for larger fish to eat away the weaker one. There is another high
rated analysis that claims that a manufacturer who has enjoyed fat margins or
good conversion spread, won’t easily settle for lower margins during a slump.
This is when he starts doing unnecessary experiments and eventually fizzles out.
As the industry in India expands (in size) and the consumer matures further,
demand for high quality products at affordable prices will become pervasive at
all levels. For a manufacturer, this may be possible with economies of scale
along with technological up grades that would attract high investments. Players
with a long term view and deeper pockets see it as an opportunity and prepare
themselves better for a boom.
Mr Agarwal, VC & Managing Director of VISA Steel attributes current market
status of Ferro alloys industry to one such period of consolidation which seems
likely to benefit the sector over the next decade and more. He asserts that this
may come through both organic and inorganic developments at different levels.
The industry has been operating at less than half its capacity but in all
likelihood, it will look up by the next quarter.
It is now a story told many times, that raw material issue has been one of the
major reasons behind the lull. However, the recently amended MMDR Act
clarifies government’s stance to improve raw material supply and push
production.
It remains a fact that the secondary small producers will continue to form an
integral part of the ecosystem. Whether consolidation or status quo, the Steel
industry in India has many milestones to cover and ripen as a market.
