The Seven Sister States, also known as ‘Paradise Unexplored’, are the bordering states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura in north-eastern India. Sikkim was appended & recognised as part of Northeast India in 1990s. Northeast India constitutes about 8% of the total India's size, and is roughly 3/4th the size of Maharashtra. Population in the region (all 8 states combined) is approximately 40 million (2011 census), which represents 3.1% of the country’s total population (1,210 million). All states put together, the population size is roughly equal to the state of Odisha.

Northeast has been largely devoted to agriculture and better known for Tea, Tradition & Travel. Howsoever, the region has certain distinct advantages. It is strategically located with access to domestic market of eastern India and adjacent to growing countries such as Bangladesh & Myanmar. The South-East Asian markets can well be accessed through this region.

The cover story has attempted to explore the once growing steel industry, currently declining because of high inventory, slow paced development, fewer government projects, law & order problems etc. There are a handful of secondary steel producers in Northeast; who have to depend on outside raw material & local demand. The demand-supply gap in power has pushed up per unit cost affecting industries like Ferro alloys to a large extent. The region has high grade coal deposits that are converted into coke in upper Assam. This coal is also procured by various industries in North India & West Bengal. The region remains a high prospect for growth in industrial development. (Pg 22)

There are some other valuable reads in the issue. Is South Africa planning to ban Scrap export? (Pg 6); Odisha coping up with raw material scarcity (Pg 14); About Gerdau and its plans for India (Pg 18); BSRM Bangladesh’s ambitious import plans (Pg 28) and others.
Happy reading..!
