India, a nation with over 1.2 billion people has a per capita steel consumption of about 60 kg; lower than much smaller economies such as Egypt (89 kg) & Venezuela (93 kg) and nearly 1/4th of the global average. One of the prime reasons behind is that more than half of Indians still live in villages that have over 70% Kutcha houses. There naturally is immense growth potential for the steel industry when these villages evolve, along with ongoing & planned infrastructure development projects in urban India.
Ministry of Steel aims to expand to 300 million tonne per annum of Steel capacity by 2025-26. When will this dream be realized, is a separate point of discussion. The main takeaway is the fact that experts do feel the increasing need of steel in the country. The NDA government in the Union Budget 2014 also set aside large amount of funds towards smart cities, low housing, power plants etc. Building all this will need huge amount of good quality steel at low cost.
Secondary players (IF installations) have played a major role in Steel industry of India especially when it comes to producing for the mass. However, because of scarce & costly raw material, they have had to bear the brunt with many even going out of business. Blast Furnace has been an effective route for mass production of good quality steel. In the cover story - ‘India’s Steel Dream’, it is our attempt to study about production of steel in India and how BF route is being/will be preferred as we mature as a producer. More than 8 MnT of Crude Steel production capacity through BF route will be added by FY16. Read more on page 24.
There are a handful of other interesting stories in the issue – Coal Block De-allocation (Pg. 4); The Chinese Finished Steel Import Glut (Pg. 8); an interview with Mr. Uday Sanghavi, Director, VT Corp (experts in providing technology & supply of Pelletization and Beneficiation plants) on Pg. 18 and many more.
