All the key Steelmaking raw materials (Iron ore, Coal, Power) in India seemingly are restricted and even rationed. Consequently, large sects of manufacturers (who can afford to) are dependent on imports. Some experts are of opinion that this is a planned move of the new government, while others quip if there is any other way out considering how mining operations have been executed in the past decade. India has set itself an ambitious target of producing 300 million tonnes of Steel in 2025. All of us are awaiting a road map for this; addressing issues related to raw material security & environmental challenges will be vital.
What role will scrap play in future Steelmaking in India? This is a billion dollar question for many in the industry. To deliberate on this & more about this vital raw material, SteelMint Group is organizing a trade meet on Ferrous Scrap & Mill Scale on 22nd November in Chennai (Tamil Nadu).
In the main story of the issue, we have attempted to understand the Scrap industry of India; for which we spoke to India’s largest Ferrous Scrap processing company – MTC that turned 40 this year. It began its operations from Mumbai in 1974 with a mere volume of collecting 70-100 tonnes of Ferrous Scrap in a month; the group presently deals with over 1.2 million tonnes of the raw material in a year with trade operations across the world. Mr. Sanjay Mehta, Director, MTC Group & VP (Ferrous), MRAI who has deep understanding of the product & its market globally talked about the vision of his company, present market, future of Scrap in India and a lot more (on pg. 24).
Some other intriguing stories in the issue are Coal Block De-allocation – Coalgate Saga (pg. 16); Mr. RK Sachdev, a veteran of the coal industry speaking of Coking coal shortage (pg 22); an example of ‘Make in India’ – Krishna Industries made India the 5th country to build naval ships out of its own steel (pg 32).
