The race to procure the key raw material - Iron ore, life blood of an Indian Steelmaker, is getting more strenuous, as restoration of Iron ore mining in Odisha is still lingering. To the extent that, large steel makers like Tata & JSW have started importing Iron ore from Australia, South Africa etc. Others on the West coast are even importing Pellet. However, these options are open largely to a bulk buyer or an integrated unit; the ones who run standalone plants are struggling for survival.
The raw material supply situation in India is quite critical with numerous mines presently non-operational. NMDC, India’s largest Iron ore miner (produced 30 MnT in FY14) which caters to over 40% of domestic demand, has a big role to play while it plans to ramp up its capacity. A large number of plants especially in East of India source the raw material from NMDC and have very high hopes from the miner. Our team met & interviewed the man at the helm of the Navratna PSU – Shri Narendra Kothari, Chairman & Managing Director, who took charge in April this year. Recently, a very unusual activity has caught attention of the industry. China is dumping Rebars at cheaper cost in India and claiming rebate from the government demonstrating the product to be Alloy Steel. Alloy Steel has import duty waiver in India plus 13% rebate to a Chinese exporter. Experts have claimed about 1 MnT of Rebars may find its way to India by year-end. Read complete coverage on Page 14.
