On one hand, the global steel industry has been experiencing glut with China Sr. Associate Editor Apurva Agrawal exporting its surplus at record levels as its domestic growth slows. Steel producing nations like UK, UAE & others have been facing the heat due of flooding of cheap steel from China.

On the other, at a time when a surplus is forcing steel mills to close down around the world, the debt-laden Indian steelmakers plan to triple their steel capacity. Betting big on higher demand from construction, railways and other steel- intensive sectors, the government has also set an ambitious target of nearly doubling the domestic per capita consumption of the alloy to 120 kg by 2020. The country however has to go a long way to catch up with the world average of 235 kg per capita consumption and the developed countries' average of 500-550 kg.

NMDC Nagarnar Plant to Be Commissioned by Early 2018

State-owned iron ore miner NMDC Limited will commence production from its 3 million tonnes per annum (mnt pa) integrated steel plant at Nagarnar in Chhattisgarh by early 2018, according to government officials.
