This is CW Interiors’ 10th Anniversary Issue, and for it to be unveiled on the 13th CWAB Awards, held on 11th September, made it even more special. Along with our longstanding custom of identifying and felicitating top architects and builders, and the more recent one of awarding Noteworthy Projects, this year CWAB has gone even deeper and recognised talent from four regions of the country, having received nominations from 56 cities! The Anniversary Issue follows the standards of excellence and inclusiveness set for the awards and showcases works of 40 architects and designers from all over India! 10 Young Achievers, 10 Compact Spaces, 10 Sustainable Spaces are cheek by jowl with 10 Unique Materials.

The Young Achievers, all under the age of 36, have infused contemporary sensibilities to the innate Indian ethos through their projects that are spread across the country. With spaces getting both expensive and scarce, and the need for green abounding, our next sections on Compact Spaces and Sustainable Spaces talk about how homes and offices are becoming smaller yet smarter; as well as how sustainable and green projects are being designed to live up to the ever-increasing need for eco-friendly spaces across the country. And at a time when innovation is the mantra, we celebrate 10 Unique Materials, each novel and worth celebrating.

Ten years is special, and so is this issue.

The 13th edition of the CONSTRUCTION WORLD ARCHITECT AND BUILDER (CWAB) AWARDS are just around the corner. Along with awarding India’s Top Architects and Builders, as well as Noteworthy Projects, CWAB will now award local players on the basis of nominations sought and a jury verdict on the shortlist presented to them. One player from each of the regions in 3 categories – Architects, Interior Designers and Builders – will be felicitated at the main event to be held on 11th September 2018 at the Four Seasons Hotel, Mumbai. The CWAB Regionals, held in Kolkata, Pune, Delhi and Bengaluru, saw interactions with experts and communities in large numbers along with entires from 56 cities. From Mumbai, a duplex home designed by ANS Design House carries a distinct Balinese vibe; while the home in Bengaluru, designed by Yellow Door architects, is elegant and simple. From Kolkata, Architect Manish Chakraborti speaks about the importance conserving and reviving structures; in Bangladesh, the Asian Paints office, designed by Utopian Architects, is truly reflective of the company’s raison d’être. European luxury brand MKM Luxe Suisse looks forward to creating designs that resonate with aspiring, Indian consumers. The events surrounding the CONSTRUCTION WORLD ARCHITECT AND BUILDER AWARDS have begun. Over and above awards for Noteworthy Projects introduced 2 years ago, this year, we have added one more facet to the awards: we’ve gone Regional. Our projects this issue are as interesting as the nominees we’ve met through our first ever regional CWAB Awards held in Kolkata. Two beautiful homes across the world with a  different ethos: One, a home in Mumbai is an artful and seamless blend of the old and the modern, with Inscape Designers retaining its old world charm whilst making it a warm, vibrant space. The other, a condo designed by Grammy Award-winning rocker Lenny Kravitz, is the new landmark in New York. Rich with materials used and ensconsed in the belief that the home needs to be a refuge,  the home is as enthralling as it is inviting.

Sarah Sham, Founder of Essajees Atelier, has designed the Wine Room in Mumbai as a perfect homage to the finer things in life.  And Icon Projects Inspace create their first fully designed office space, blending efficient space utilisation with a quirky twist.

Our cover feature on glass strikes the right balance between function and finesse, validating the material’s popularity and versatility. Wooden flooring creates its own warmth and appeal in the special feature; Vibhor Sogani talks about his  ideas and expressions that take the form of artworks and installations; while designer-duo Anchal and Anand Kashyap share their passion for recycling automobiles into futuristic works of art.

The sweltering heat this summer makes it difficult to focus unless ensconced in cool comfortable environs. So although our cover story is on kitchens, it’s a cool guide to innovative designs and the newest technologies available today, which makes being in the kitchen a respite and a delight. And our feature on doors and windows, focuses on the choicest openings, that insulate, seamlessly merge even while demarcating, create an inviting ambience and make a statement as well. Our trend piece covers light, airy and versatile wicker furniture, favoured in the tropics. With a host of other spaces and some accomplished personalities featured this issue, the June issue is sure to keep the temperature soaring.

Last month, the Indian architectural fraternity experienced the greatest pride. Architect BV Doshi was awarded the highest honour in architecture, the Pritzker Prize, making him the first-ever Indian to receive it. We salute BV Doshi for the honour and pride that his achievements have brought India.

Taking a leaf out of Doshi’s book, we’ve continued the theme of sustainability and it’s importance in creating smart cities, projects and homes. Our trends piece gives an insight into all the new entrants in the Tile market that are spoiling consumers for choice.

Continuing along the vein of very accomplished professionals, CW Interiors also met with the renowned Japanese architect, Sou Fujimoto. We also caught up with Jimmy Mistry from the Della Group, who tells us about all his exciting future projects.

The country's top architects, builders and interior designers were awarded for their work. Established and upcoming architects were also awarded for the noteworthy projects they are doing across the country. The February issue of CW Interiors celebrates the month of love with splendid products and personalities. The December issue of CW Interiors has a great mix of design, decor and architecture stories. We bring to you the stunning designs of Regis Mathieu, Director of Mathieu Lustrerie, whose work stems from a great tradition of light design which is paired with his personal modern sensibilities. For your flooring needs, we highlight tiles and ceramics this month and discuss how to use them and some of the latest innovations in this industry. It’s the month of festivities like Christmas and New Year parties, so we decided to help you with some ideas for decor-related updates around the home. 

There are beautiful homes to be inspired from this month. Take a look at the Mumbai home of actress Monica Bedi which is designed by Architect Priyanka Mehra, it is a blend of old-world charm with bursts of modernity. Talking about creating a home that truly celebrates nature, Architects Olivier Bourgeois and Régis Lechasseur tell us how they created a beautiful family home in rural Quebec. It’s not just homes that can inspire, take a look at the H&M office in Taiwan designed Johnny Chiu in our December issue, it has an open layout and truly dissolves the hierarchy of a typical office.
