Pyre by Nicole Marie reads of fire, charcoal and smoke. Art from Brian Michael Barbeito cuts the poetic tension with photography and Michael C. Keith brings the humour home with Photo Finished. Sapha Burnell brings the second piece of her magic realism serial Son of Abel, and the adventures of Caleb Mauthisen. Ian Kent surrounds his poetry with more photography from Brian Michael Barbeito and Hide Obara tones us out with a holiday-light tone. Enjoy.

MacroMicroCosm closes Volume 7 with Astral. A mighty shout out to the two prose pieces within Astral, Matthew Buscemi’s To Shape the Future, and Sacha Rosel’s Into Something Rich and Strange (from Chapter 1 of her newly released novel My Heart is The Tempest). We have multiple pieces of poetry from longstanding contributor Adrienne Stevenson, Peter Graarup Westergaard (from his Warning Light Calling collection done in a dissident Soviet style, not dogma), and returning contributor Matthew Fast, who has the prestige to have been in the primordial issue of MacroMicroCosm years ago. Fast’s poetry is based off his song lyrics for the upcoming The Far Lands album, and I am pumped about hearing it via bandcamp when it hits Abram’s Epilogue.

Michael Janairo gives us three poems, while Sapha Burnell closes us off with one we used to end Volume 7 and bring on the stellar theme to Volume 8. Art by Sarah Melgoza & Katelyn Lane surrounds the poetry, while our last contributor is a posthumous submission by the estate of Cotrina Graham Smith. We hope you enjoy seeing 1980’s layouts, we got a kick out of them! So much so we featured the poems ‘as is’.

For 2021’s last breaths and into the new 2022, let us breathe deep, and talk. At the end of our conversations, whatever differences we have, let us celebrate our strengths and allow for a few beautiful ways. As Ra-ina discovers in Shea E. Butler’s The Awakening, let us find the voices which save us, and stand tall where we ought. Let’s laugh at the ironic, as Mr. Tezozomoc proves between Uncle and Nephew in A Canticle for the Land. We can also fight for the battles which keep our safety in tandem with our freedoms, as Thomas plans in Mouth of the River Part 4 by returning contributor Elyssa Campbell. Tim Hickson, of the widely popular YouTube & Nebula channel Hello Future Me shatters a sense of the Other with Panstellar, where even the stars… I won’t spoil it. Kate Meyer-Currey and Charles Halsted wrote poems about the exhaustion of health care providers in Gloves and Bucket of Blood, while Kate Keenan of Big Bend Literary Magazine wrote of palliative care based on the last days of her Grandmother, a story she and I share in detail. Even making the bed. Matthew Buscemi gives us three pieces, two reviews Cogito & Dim Shadow and Hear Ye Hear Ye, a fantasy romp. Geoff Sawers rounds out our poetry with Aperiodic Comet, where Stephen Skinner debuts with his sci-fi tale At the Anchorite’s Shore. Visual artists Marissa Wagner and Laura Becker round out the fiction, poetry and review with digital art pieces both vibrant and impactful. We hope you enjoy.

Kimberly Moore, author & educator wrote God of the Mountain, a fantasy story that remains a living entity in my mind months after a first peruse. Literary Critic Matthew Buscemi gives us two reviews, one on The Fall of the Hammer by Serdar Yegulalp, and Ursula Le Guin’s Annals of the West trilogy. RL Arenz III, author of Aegis, hits us upside the gullet with a retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and reviews cyberpunk adventure Neon Lieben. DESIGNMuse Marissa Wagner gives her take on opening doors, while Sapha does double-duty and donates an article on cosmogony in world-building. It’s a rich issue, with massive talent and I hope you open the doors of your eyes wide.

It’s time to reintroduce ourselves to our folk, and bring more (one weed at a time) into our fold.

In this issue, we carry poetry by Michele Mekel, Catherine Allen, Mark Fisher, Adrienne Stevenson, David Davies, and Katie Meyer-Currey. Our fiction continues with Mouth of the River Part 3 by Elyssa Campbell and The Bramble Mother by Georgia Cook. The flagship DESIGN-Muse Marissa Wagner talks folk & art, and multimedia artist Jolene Armstrong rounds us out with Artist/Machine.

We intended to conclude this superhero collection with a move to redemption. In order to redeem the villain (and society), we the heroes have a painful path. How do we enter a space of repair if we aren’t confronted with what a villain represents?

It is an idealist’s dream which brings MacroMicroCosm here, a place where discourse of sometimes disparate voices begins and ends with compassionate respect.

Arenz III concludes the abridged and alternate ending of Aegis, which he published as a novel with Vræyda Literary earlier this year. Like Screams from Deep Space by Gregory J. Glanz shoves us into sci-fi with a mastery of the short yarn. Amirah Al Wassif closes us off with To Bury a Curious Girl.

Just as 2021 roars in with the hopeful positivity of the majority of the planet, an underbelly to shaking dead branches off Yggdrasil exists. Speaking of mystic trees… In this issue, we watch a crow eat as Shaumberg meets a female Jesus in Under the Jonquil by Gryffyd Eamonn Dempsey. Kyle Ross descends into vigilanteism with gunfire and manic laughter in another abridgement of R.L. Arenz III’s newly released novel Aegis. Newcomer short fiction rockstar Elyssa Campbell brings us the first of a multi-issue serial Mouth of the River; a distinctly Canadian science-fiction-meets-Prairie-life adventure with Thomas, Ava and Louis. Sapha Burnell brings the necessity for a new paradigm in her poem Poseidon. Tyler W Burch continues his series on World Building with an article on species creation. 
So where is the trip-wire between unorthodox ‘hero’ and traditionalism’s ‘villain’? A sense of ethical humanity. 

R. L. Arenz III brings us a few examples of change we can enact every day in Bystanders: To Be or Not To Be. He also hits us upside the feels with the second instalment of the Aegis Saga: By-Stand, where Kyle Ross learns the cost of standing aside. 
Simultaneous is the array of forces attempting to pitch us all out of control, and into the clutches of worse power situations. We cannot let chaos win.
Most of our living has little to do with politics, but more with ethics. We have to reclaim the distinction between the body politic and the ethics of daily living. Our choices in commerce, food consumption, clothing and community standards do not have to go through committee to have a profound effect on the local, national and international. 
In this way, none of us are bystanders. There is an impact on every decision we make, and while that idea can be exhausting, it's also one of the most powerful parts of being a human inside community. One of the best ways to learn, is to experience literature outside our original frames of reference. Amirah Al Wassif gives us one more poem in Against the Broiling Sun. Newcomer Tyler W. Burch brings an article on what a planet can add to a creative work. And finally, Sapha Burnell gives a preview chapter of her upcoming science fiction novel Neon Lieben. Hal Grundy gives another look at community in Us Versus Them Can F*ck Off. We hope you find catharsis and enjoyment from this issue.

We need heroes. A hero wielding a pen is a harsh animal. Twice given to instincts, open as a shield-less Spartan. A superhero does not attack without cause. It is the duty of  heroes to discover the sides of every argument, and with fairness and compassion, find the best path. Mythic people, who go through turmoil and come out not as jaded ‘realists’ cursing the names of the passionate young and stubborn elders. Eternal idealists, who pick up, dust off, and give utopia one more go.
There is always cause to push back and refine our bridge to a utopic world. Division will never bring healing and peace to the globe.
Is the best we have to offer division? We began this issue with a poster of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebrating multiple cultures, and creating equal opportunity for all cannot also wash out the myriad of patterns which inspire our world. We must create a global culture of equal opportunity, while maintaining universal human rights, and allowing for the celebration of many cultures.
We share the personal opinions of readers, who wrote into Plan Utopia. These opinions are the property of the original writers.
I know seeing disparate opinions can make some readers uncomfortable.
The first piece to rectification is awareness of outside perspectives. Once we hear these opinions, we can with compassion, discuss them. Open them up and reveal them for what they are. Educate some, encourage others, until we discover how best to shift the world we have to the world we want.
